First held in 1943, the event was designed to attract attention from French fashion during World War II, when experts fashion industry were unable to travel to Paris to see French fashion parades.
Publicist Eleanor Lambert Fashion organized an event she called “Press Week” to show Americans for fashion journalists, who had previously neglected their innovations designers. (Buyers were not admitted to the program, and instead had to visit showrooms of designers.)
